I hosted book club this month & we discussed the novel The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. It was a really great read for the month of October as it kept you guessing, "Who done it?" and its mentioned ghosts. Nothing scary, but quite delightful & fun to read. I recommend it for sure.
I had a lot of fun planning the evening. I pulled every hard back book I owned off my shelf & decorated the front room with them as the main character grew up in a bookshop. I lit all the candles I could find to help set the theme too.
The picture framed is of a home set with a topiary garden. This is what I pictured the main house to somewhat look like in the book.

I served a lemon poppyseed bundt cake, hot chocolate & tea sandwiches. All of which were mentioned in the book. :)
The cake was my moms recipe that I haven't had in years. It was fun to bake & even more fun to eat. Yum!
I found these white mugs at IKEA for only 99cents. Score!
For the finger sandwiches I made a chicken salad one & then a cucumber w/veggie cream cheese one. Gotta love any excuse to eat white bread eh? :) Everything turned out perfect! I had a great turn out & everyone had read the book. I decided to have a 'door prize' & asked a very specific question pertaining to the book. Hannah was the first to shout out the answer so she won the prize. It was a copy of Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre was repeatedly mentioned in the Thirteenth Tale so I thought it was a fun prize. Plus, it's such a good read too. As everyone left they got to take home a little favor.
The two main characters were both writers & had such passion for story telling. "I still believe in stories. I still forget myself when I am in the middle of a good book." - Margaret pg 32
So the conversation was great & the company wonderful. I sure do love book club!

I really loved that book, except for the icky Charlie and Isabelle chapter. I didn't have it figured out, and the end surprised me. I like books that surprise me.
What a clever idea to theme your book club meeting to the book read. I think I'll see if I can find it and read it - you've gotten me curious !
You are amazing! I miss book club:( They have book club here but its new and not very many people come, and its in the club house which isnt very fun either haha!
Holy fetch, Rach! You are the party planning QUEEN!! I bow down to you! Every last detail was perfect. A framed picture of the house you imagined?? Take home favors? Books everywhere with lighted candles?! My jaw is to the floor! You, my lady, are an ar-teest! ;)
